On its 50th appearance in the Top 75, the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” makes its biggest slide to date, falling 43-60 – but the 4,899 copies it sold last week see it safely past the million sales mark, and make it the 100th single to reach the target and the 26th by an American act.

At the start of the 21st century, only 70 singles had sold a million copies. “I Gotta Feeling” is the 11th song released since then to secure a seven figure sale but the advent of the digital age means that 19 singles released in the last century have also crossed the million sales mark, including such veteran campaigners as “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” by Ian Dury & the Blockheads (up from 979,000 to 1,005,000), Adam & the Ants’ “Stand And Deliver” (985,000 to 1,007,000) and Take That’s “Back For Good” (959,000 to 1,042,000).
